Overview

Suppose all of you are forced not to wear Indian cloths and put on a felt hat compulsorily to come to school. Will you like it? Will you resist?
Get around the point that colonialism does not use force alone, it wants the people of the colony to accept the colonial culture as superior. School and Education are the instrument to do that.

Some Basics about the resources:

  1. Let us have a clarity at the outset. Any resource / video is not neutral. A teacher must develop a sense of critical viewing among students. We give an example of the way critical viewing can be developed by looking at some technical and pedagogical issues.
  2. As a teacher you must go through these resources beforehand so that you are well prepared to discuss and clarify to students. Also, you can decide the way you want to use them
  3. The first check is to remember that these resources are an add-on to the textbook and not a substitute

Specific Points about the resources shared:

  1. In this document you will find videos which take the students through the aspects of Vietnam War, setting the foundation for understanding the war.
  2. The video 1 is not exclusively on Vietnam war. It is titled “cold war in Asia” and the Vietnam war comes to for from time line ~ 04. 15 onwards. Till now the video gives ideas about US concerns about the rise of communism and US Korea was which was a kind of backdrop for the Vietnam war.
  3. Video 2 is more of a documentary, again showcasing the American side. But it has some historic footages of the US Presidents and of the War.
  4. Video 3 is about the Ho Chi Minh Trail (just 03:54 minutes). The Trail connected North and South Vietnam during a brutal war. It also aided Vietnamese soldiers. The trail shaved nearly five months of time for the trip. It was used as a secret weapon of sorts.

Key problem areas in using video:

  1. problem 1: The accent of the narrator
    The narrator of the video is not from India. So, the English they speak sounds very different. Students may find the English spoken little difficult to understand because of this accent.
    Solution to this problem:
    One solution to this problem is to use the transcript option available on YouTube. See below how to make the transcription work.

  3. problem 2: Fast pace of narration
    Another key issue you will face while using this video is the fast speed of narration by the speaker. Given the fact that English is either a second or third language of students in our country, the pace of the speaker may create problem of comprehension for the learners.

  5. problem 3: Difficult words / terminology
    In this video you will find that the speaker has used very specific terminologies (difficult words) related to the topic such as Communism, Dictatorship, Cold war etc. Not having a clarity on these words / terms may be a major obstacle for students to grasp the idea fully.
    Solution to this problem:
    Hence you need to plan about engaging with students on these concepts. Preparing a glossary of such terms and sharing with students in advance may also be a good idea.

  7. problem 4: U.S. point of view
    As pointed out earlier a resource is always likely to have a slant. It is important to note that the first two videos represent the US point of view. Thus, they have very little to say about the Vietnamese perspective.
    Solution to this problem:
    The first check is to remember that these videos are an add-on to the textbook and not a substitute. So, while sharing the videos with students tell them upfront and ask them to compare the chapter and the videos. If time permits, it’s is important to share with them other perspectives on the war as well.
    • Under the Further Recommended Resources section, you will find two films about the Vietnam war from Vietnams perspective. Once you have shown the videos followed by classroom discussion, you can use the video given below to further enhance their understanding of the war.
      • These two videos can be shared with students so that they can watch the films at their end and come to class to discuss (The Flipped Classroom way)
      • You could also give an assignment to identify the differences between the two films and / or videos and the chapter.

How to transform a video into educational resource:

While showing videos it is very important to ask questions related to the content being showed. This would act as an ongoing assessment in the classroom to understand if the children are able to follow or not.
Example: Key break points while teaching the class video 1

  1. At 04:41 is an important breakpoint as the students through the video will be exposed to terminologies very specific to the topic being addressed. Few examples of the same are Imperialist, Liberty, Equality Justice etc. Pause at this point for learning check on the given terms to see if the students are at the same pace.
  2. At 05:39 is another break point to pause and explain the concept of Domino Theory. Pause the video at this point and you can also ask students to write their answers about the theory and share with the class.
  3. At 06:00 you may pause here and connect the series of events that took place till 1950 and the role of US and France in the given time. You can also use the board for recounting the chronology.
  4. At 10:36 US secret plan for the War to be discussed with the students

Further Readings

This is an excerpt from a nonfiction book referring to a historical event the Vietnam War. It takes the remembrance wall, Veterans Memorial as the base to talk about the lives lost during the war. This excerpt focuses on the emotional aspects bringing out the impact the war had on the lives of the people.
